Victorian Oamaru

Yesterday (Saturday) was the parade and no Santa in sight. although the Queen and the wizard made an appearance with the mayor. Penny Farthings were plentiful.
Cute kids in bonnets riding carriages,
Not sure why he's carrying a spare wheel.
The singing and whistling policeman put in an appearance, an arresting sight.

Followed by the temperence and votes for women supporters.
There were loads of old cars.

Today was the Fete with good weather, and a big crowd. I didn't get time to take any photos as I was busy in Tote weaving on the floor loom and answering lots of questions. I'm quite tired tonight. My daughter spent her day slaving in a nearby coffee shop.

Hi Doe,

Thanks for your comment on my site, and for your brave effort in putting together a post on yours after your busy weekend! Lovely to see the photos of the parade. It would have been fun to have got there, but I really did need to take things quietly. I hope you get new customers as a result of your efforts over the weekend. I guess sales are more likely to happen after an event like that with so much going on. Hope we can get up to see you soon (and mum and dad too!).

Best Wishes, Peter, Laura, and Ginger (the cat!)

Hi Jody,
The Pennyfarthing is the bike they're riding in the picture. Another name for them was 'ordinary cycle' and they predate the modern bicycle. No brakes....! I think the name is for the two wheels the penny being the bigger coin and the small farthing coin representing the little wheel.
If you come to Oamaru you can actually learn to ride one.
