I hope to keep my blog a little more up to date.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I was musing about where this blog was going on our daily walk. Probably not something this neighbour has to worry about.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I've loved my Instagram feed over the last few months. So inspiring. I'm @doearnot if your curious. There are some familiar faces there as well as a whole new load of dyers, weavers, knitters, philosophers, travellers that are so creative who I've never seen before. Some even from my locality.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So returning to this blog, I think I'll attempt to post a little more often as sometimes it's nice to record a bit more than just a photo.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So this year will see more weaving and spinning. I hope to do a lot more natural dyeing especially with locally foraged plant material beginning in the wilderness we call a garden. The plain but serviceable one. The Cinderella.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">But I love this wheel. Both of us are past our youth and prime. I'm a sloppy but proficient spinner and so I twist her neck around to suit whatever chair I'm sitting on or to ease my slightly worn hip or change hand positions. She valiantly keeps turning even when her bobbin is bursting with spun yarn. I guess soon I should think about replacing her treadles and maybe get her a new treadle axel to cure her little wobble. The leaves die back or suffer from the weather and stress of growing offspring.</div><div>Reading how Phormium Tenax is used in dyeing there are several different opinions.</div><div>Last year I tried long soaking preparation of the dried seed pods, but found in the heat of the summer that the solution fermented sooner than the ten days suggested to prepare the dye and smelt horrible. Nor was it a particular strong dye producing bland fawns even though I used a quantity of older dry seed pods. I also kept some in alcohol for a number of weeks but the colour was disappointing too.</div><div>Yet there is a promise of dark chocolate browns and deep tan.</div><div>So this summer I picked a small pan of pods and cut them up into small pieces. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As you may have noticed from my blog (and it was one of the attractions from my point of view when my husband first said "let's move to New Zealand") that I have a passion for wool and NZ wool in particular. Coloured wool is well represented by the bags and fadges of the raw stuff in both my little wool store (ex-sleepout) and the garage. So I'm always keen to see what other people and especially local farmers are doing with their wool. <a href="http://kiwiyarns.wordpress.com/2014/07/26/pilana-the-yarn-from-the-pihepe-sheep/" target="_blank">kiwiyarns</a> (who has written an interesting post about the wool) alerted me to this company just 4 hours drive from me here in the South Island developing a knitting yarn from their flock of Pitt Island Merino.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
You can read the story <a href="http://www.rnbeattie.co.nz/pilana.php" target="_blank">here</a> of how this very large flock came to live on the Banks peninsula and Roger Beattie's story of how he brought them to his property. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Firstly I have to say, from working with some of the raw wool of these undeveloped (previously feral) sheep such as Arapawa and Pitt Island that the fibre is challenging. There is variety of staple length, fineness, crimp structure and colour in even a single fleece. It makes for exciting prep and spinning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So sending these fleeces for commercial spinning is a challenge too. The handspinner compensates effortlessly to different staple lengths by adjusting how far their hands are apart and slowly or stopping their wheel to smooth out a lump or thin out the fibre prep a little more. This is not possible with automated machinery so Roger Beattie asked the mill to slow the whole spinning process down.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The yarn has low level twist applied at both the single and plied stages.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZB7f0FZU5qVaExdAEEro9SIicfL_DrpS8uRJLkhJrEufqr3igHRom0KHB28Rt2gfv2W4lq0W6NBi3RTsPo_GdvLXvi6Cj0rfySBZcAE8EDhL6-KKIwvBpJDS-Adu6ljAPKmPj_6GxF8sj/s640/blogger-image-538403695.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZB7f0FZU5qVaExdAEEro9SIicfL_DrpS8uRJLkhJrEufqr3igHRom0KHB28Rt2gfv2W4lq0W6NBi3RTsPo_GdvLXvi6Cj0rfySBZcAE8EDhL6-KKIwvBpJDS-Adu6ljAPKmPj_6GxF8sj/s640/blogger-image-538403695.jpg" /></a></div>
The yarn I have chosen to try is a blend of 50% Pitt Island fleece from the 'Pihepe'sheep combined with some modern merino fibre and 25% possum. I would love to try the other two yarns one blended with alpaca and the other with cashmere. I knit a sample and also used it as weft in a handwoven sample.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The yarn itself consists of 4 plies which appear to have been lightly spun anti-clockwise (S twist), then twisted into a two ply clockwise (Z) and finally a 4 ply Z twist. The yarn is very softly spun and is like a shetland woollen spun yarn so not suitable for a warp yarn.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The knitted swatch used 3.25mm needles which made a lovely fabric and really bloomed when I washed it. I would try bigger needles next time as the stitches really puffed up after washing.The 20% possum creates a halo in the fabric once washed. The knitted swatch is fluffier than the woven sample which could be brushed to raise the nap.. I think some pilling might occur in the knitted fabric with use as the fibres are quite short and very lightly twisted together. There was very little shedding fibres as I used the yarn.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_-9BEoia_gmx2pllsvpCW9yavpWKTZAHhVP6Z4OyoJqgFI7NMky8oOmKTbt1DKDPUNEr2K7FdNlGE4KnTSBd5b2hECVo_zCQwy2HfleLPNBY5jRkFXpoBz9Q8r1n0ORnj9Lchyvag_M_t/s640/blogger-image-531594870.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_-9BEoia_gmx2pllsvpCW9yavpWKTZAHhVP6Z4OyoJqgFI7NMky8oOmKTbt1DKDPUNEr2K7FdNlGE4KnTSBd5b2hECVo_zCQwy2HfleLPNBY5jRkFXpoBz9Q8r1n0ORnj9Lchyvag_M_t/s640/blogger-image-531594870.jpg" /></a></div>
I only put the Pilana yarn in the weft of my woven sample and it is probably too fragile for the warp although possibly woven gently on a rigid heddle loom it might not pull apart as warp providing it isn't abraded in the heddle. I used my handspun Arapawa yarn for warp. This has similar properties to the Pilana wool although not as soft.I gently washed and fulled the finished fabric slightly. It would make lovely scarves.<br />
This yarn is expensive $18.95 for 180m and is only available from the <a href="http://www.rnbeattie.co.nz/" target="_blank">website</a> at present in a 4ply (fingering) weight and in one natural brown colour.<br />

So of course I had to see how well it dyed with the last bit of yarn from the ball. I used acid wool dye for speed but I would like to try dyeing the yarn with natural plant dyes. I think indigo and cochineal would work well.<br />
If you like working with New Zealand wool and want to support the farmers who help sustain these breeds then try this yarn, it comes with a fascinating history.Doespinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04760221190794336414noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8157957182206065559.post-88277967111453691822014-07-05T19:25:00.001+12:002014-07-05T19:25:27.530+12:00In the dye shedI've been quiet on here recently but I have been really busy in the real world of my dye shed refiguring the space so I can increase my output with a better system and more useable space. This is going to involve dyeing bigger quantities of yarn in much bigger vats but keeping on with small runs of the variegated yarns. <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivhyphenhyphen_AWv7I1ENI1npJLP02Lp_EFiZFTNoUxfWQDNvXpRex7pprD68DiQynErfVjb_IPydqNxZYa7lOA7uG5YoyX866Yn0t4KyO82WI2AefMe8jno2fp5QKAidtqcw2vjzaLsgTkMRpKhNA/s640/blogger-image--836706388.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivhyphenhyphen_AWv7I1ENI1npJLP02Lp_EFiZFTNoUxfWQDNvXpRex7pprD68DiQynErfVjb_IPydqNxZYa7lOA7uG5YoyX866Yn0t4KyO82WI2AefMe8jno2fp5QKAidtqcw2vjzaLsgTkMRpKhNA/s640/blogger-image--836706388.jpg"></a></div>I really love to use semi-solid colours that have the 'hand dyed' look about them but are bigger dye lots. The vats need to sit on a small platform on the floor so this involved clearing the limited floor space. I've also turned our tiny office into the yarn storage area. How I love to make yarn. Its the whole deal too. From purchasing the undyed (and often direct from the animal) fibre, to washing, dyeing, carding and finally spinning. Normally I spin skinny yarns for weaving fine shawls and scarves. But I've been exploring fat, sleek yarns, at least 10ply weight. yarns to knit cosy things with from good wholesome New Zealand sheep such as the Romney,Gotland,Halfbred and Polwarth as well as our lovely Merino.<br />

I have a good pile of naturally coloured wool myself. But I also love to overdye it since the undertones of the pale greys, browns and moorit give the colours a soft tonal quality without having to resort to black dye.<br />
Sometimes I do the blending on the carder mixing my pre-dyed white fibre with the naturally earthy colours of the sheep and alpaca wool.<br />

Several members of our co-operative <a href="http://www.oamaruweaving.co.nz/the_oamaru_textile_emporium" target="_blank">textiles shop </a>spin yarns to sell. Most of these yarns are bought by tourists traveling around NZ from abroad. I rarely list these yarns online as they sell so well in the physical shop or I have used them myself for finished items. But I have plans to list some of them online soon so watch this space.<br />

I spin nearly all my yarn at home on <a href="http://www.majacraft.co.nz/" target="_blank">a Majacraft </a>wheel, although my travel wheel is a single treadle <a href="http://www.ashford.co.nz/newsite/spinning-wheels/104/spinning/joy-2-double-treadle/moredetail.html" target="_blank">Joy</a> wheel which I won in a raffle at the Cromwell Creative Fibre festival several years ago (lucky me). A very portable robust little wheel. Wheel preference is such an individual thing. I like to have big bobbins so I can spin and ply at least 200g skeins. A double treadle is a very comfortable way of peddling. Being able to adjust the height of the orifice is important too as it helps the body find that position to spin which is easy to maintain and causes least strain. I spin nearly every day even for 10 minutes or so. The cat has got adjusted to the slight roller coaster effect when she comes to sit on my knee.<br />

Beginning 2014 with a self-indulgent project just for me. A whole year of the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kaleidoscope-club---january-2014" target="_blank">Kaleidoscope Club</a> with <a href="http://www.thenaturaldyestudio.com/" target="_blank">The Natural Dye Studio</a> and their delicious yarn. So this is January's segment of the blanket.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAZq7d-yrN1lqLeARxc5durMyddw0m6N4qnOYqw0E7xtbr9P7qzuRdVDrs9pE07tngE-qO18X7j-s12e90if7qsR-HzkxlrcLNm9HAxpeUBm-ScsXcJkV1AL9gAM5fVRigJ3xXsGjvAVQ2/s1600/k+blanket+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAZq7d-yrN1lqLeARxc5durMyddw0m6N4qnOYqw0E7xtbr9P7qzuRdVDrs9pE07tngE-qO18X7j-s12e90if7qsR-HzkxlrcLNm9HAxpeUBm-ScsXcJkV1AL9gAM5fVRigJ3xXsGjvAVQ2/s1600/k+blanket+2.jpg" height="307" width="320" /></a></div>
The crochet is unblocked so far so the triangles will open up and flatten out a little more in the final blanket.<br />
I'm quite a firm crocheter so had to go up 3 sizes of hook to match the correct size of each triangle. The motifs are really straightforward to work and you soon remember the pattern. The fun is in the changing colours. Don't tell <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/designers/amanda-perkins" target="_blank">Amanda</a> the designer but one of my colours is not the correct one in the centre triangles. Maybe its because I love orange so much I forgot to change to red. I dont think she's noticed. I admit to being a sloppy pattern follower who thinks her memory is better than it is. The design already lives up to its name.<br />
So February instructions arrived today.......<br />
The yarns are:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMbyM9qtPzTRkSPMxX8yX6dbm0J6vrr-L1Y6b_Y0cDCSnNkNRxNQS3yTAw_rLzZl3SlMN4yLPRK1-BxDLxJecw6UMNe2K_-QbbC6dRsFdOzAwVWtDi-ZEnvqm8qrBsfbA4UA_RrcQWVmB4/s1600/k+blanket+yarns.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMbyM9qtPzTRkSPMxX8yX6dbm0J6vrr-L1Y6b_Y0cDCSnNkNRxNQS3yTAw_rLzZl3SlMN4yLPRK1-BxDLxJecw6UMNe2K_-QbbC6dRsFdOzAwVWtDi-ZEnvqm8qrBsfbA4UA_RrcQWVmB4/s1600/k+blanket+yarns.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
A stunning high twist merino fingering (4ply) weight <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/the-natural-dye-studio-godiva-ht" target="_blank">yarn</a>. If you have trouble with yarns splitting apart when you crochet (especially lightly plied S twist yarns) then this yarn is made for crochet. It's not plied and the twist is in the Z direction so it tightens slightly as you crochet each stitch.. The twist is well set by the yarn spinner so your work won't skew and the lustre of the yarn shows off the stitching.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The colours of the yarns come from plant dyes such as logwood, indigo, madder, weld and the cochineal bug. <a href="http://www.thenaturaldyestudio.com/" target="_blank">Amanda and Daisy </a>coax an amazing variety of different colours from what could be considered a limited dye range. Happily for me it looks like this blanket is going to use a fair number of those colours.<br />
<br />
The<a href="http://www.oamaruweaving.co.nz/the_oamaru_textile_emporium" target="_blank"> bricks and mortar shop </a>has been exceedingly busy over the last month so I've been dyeing yarns (synthetic dyes) flat out to keep the shelves stocked and weaving in any spare time to keep a stock in of wraps, blankets and scarves... already its looking depleted again.... Which means I haven't updated the <a href="http://felt.co.nz/shop/doespins" target="_blank">FELT</a> shop in a while. I plan to remedy this situation soon.<br />

It's a treat because it doesn't flower every year. Another Oamaru Victorian Fete day this last Sunday began with very gloomy clouds and a smattering of rain. So it was still fairly quiet at 10.15 when I sneaked away from the shop to take some photos. This must be my 9th or10th fete day, the last 7 spent inside our textile shop on Tyne Street.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih_xyN_2oG2rS8X9QnQjG6CGdSZhSBOk1Ju_D3g1PQbOlXVIrdU5pNMzj8C-DcIE8MKeS5VqlbiMCPpMp1YaVFw0dCCZa-jJSk4fpWPVMnimjRLX1q7bpJwL4CJycqXSRONsvq7D-BJLYA/s1600/fete+day+couple.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih_xyN_2oG2rS8X9QnQjG6CGdSZhSBOk1Ju_D3g1PQbOlXVIrdU5pNMzj8C-DcIE8MKeS5VqlbiMCPpMp1YaVFw0dCCZa-jJSk4fpWPVMnimjRLX1q7bpJwL4CJycqXSRONsvq7D-BJLYA/s320/fete+day+couple.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
However already people were beginning to show up in their costumes like this elegant pair happy to be photographed.<br />

I loved this stall outside in Harbour street. The soaps, creams and potions definitely looked and smelled good enough to eat.<br />
The crowds eventually arrived and so I spent the day in the shop. The weather improved and we had a great day chatting to many of the tourists who had dressed up especially for the day. There were steampunk, bohemian, servants, harlots,grand ladies, victorian school children, explorers....a visual treat of colour swept through our doors. Every Fete day has its own flavour and its interesting watching them involve.This one certainly had a broad spectrum of costumes from the sci-fi to strait laced Victorian, some innovative stall decoration and display. However without all the hardworking volunteers and committee members each year putting in hours of unpaid work it would never happen. Thanks everyone for a fantastic day.<br />
<br />
So back to the office this week and the dyepots. Next Saturday I'm demonstrating spinning and weaving on the black and coloured sheep stand at the South Canterbury A and P show in Waimate so have some preparation for that.<br />
My 'apprentice' dyer and helper <a href="http://www.flagstaffalpacas.co.nz/" target="_blank">Andy</a> has become a fully fledged dyer under his own <a href="http://www.flagstaffalpacas.co.nz/MultiDyedYarns" target="_blank">Flagstaff</a> label. You can buy these yarns in 200g skeins in his colourways from his website and on his alpaca farm. I haven't seen the yarns in person yet but here's a photo I borrowed from Ravelry that he took of some of them drying on the line. Reminds me of colourful prayer flags.<br />

I love the simplicity of plain weave and its ability to be a canvas for colour. I love my Ashford floor loom also because its not difficult to weave on. I can wind my cloth on from the front and pedal easily freeing my hands for the actual weaving process. It's the most comfortable loom I own to weave on.<br>
So here's a photo of the loom in situ in my little studio in town. <br><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioMQTCkkrY1s7T-3edONp__PgqL1nZowhaQ-wAAaHiZzSsjzHp2XnFQPAv1glX_v0l7O8aVTyn-H-Rufk3VXbXzzWRMTYgrfWY7Q1ZDOcEGLxPGd3J75Z-jmKN3n21DWuzaMgEE1sVqAAh/s640/blogger-image--99222952.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioMQTCkkrY1s7T-3edONp__PgqL1nZowhaQ-wAAaHiZzSsjzHp2XnFQPAv1glX_v0l7O8aVTyn-H-Rufk3VXbXzzWRMTYgrfWY7Q1ZDOcEGLxPGd3J75Z-jmKN3n21DWuzaMgEE1sVqAAh/s640/blogger-image--99222952.jpg"></a></div>Beautiful hand dyed yarns don't need any more textured drafts as the subtle shading of the dye saturation does it all for me.<br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggN2TVswTfL9OtslZwfIlZNlXPr2t-wDd8YPvezQctv_LLyOaiDq0XWkn_MH9M0jsjxz02kujJ4ZTicm-mUgBefIrOMAAsShG3sJXWAA7x7oZPN2nVGdTda6qU13ECvm5-zzdM2W04IjDX/s640/blogger-image-628938399.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggN2TVswTfL9OtslZwfIlZNlXPr2t-wDd8YPvezQctv_LLyOaiDq0XWkn_MH9M0jsjxz02kujJ4ZTicm-mUgBefIrOMAAsShG3sJXWAA7x7oZPN2nVGdTda6qU13ECvm5-zzdM2W04IjDX/s640/blogger-image-628938399.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Doespinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04760221190794336414noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8157957182206065559.post-67504397534260943192013-10-04T22:42:00.001+13:002013-10-05T07:27:48.919+13:00What's on the loom today...It's sad that Ashford's are no-longer making floor-looms. They were probably one of the last makers in New Zealand although it's possible Jim Mecchia may have made the last commercial one.<br />
I like using both my Mecchia and Ashford. The Ashford's jack loom is lighter to use, has less loom waste and I seem to use it more. I have adapted it for sectional warping. It's very easy to thread the heddles. Mine is 38inches wide but invariably I weave narrower warps. Mine is possibly a 1980's four shaft model. I use an adjustable office chair on wheels to both warp and weave.<br />
So what's on the loom today....luscious silk, wool and alpaca all hand dyed and looking like this:-<br />

One of my favourite colour ways in the yarns I dye is this graphic white and black colourway called Eely point. This is the first time I've dyed it on the boucle or woven with it.<br />
The first photo shows the colourway on wool. The boucle alpaca is so soft and light after it is washed. I put pale pink across the last scarf. <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkI_hVXs_3Pq1JIXzmU1VWtnW8f2mpJENnAWu3AASWYip4i-23kYnirwDg9fgHxoM5BfPAnicQLloikhHfSm1_zw42zjt1VFK0WsO8yHOi3QfGlJYEPFTlIjPmBWVXULtk7wB1U7hOefpe/s640/blogger-image--1057559751.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkI_hVXs_3Pq1JIXzmU1VWtnW8f2mpJENnAWu3AASWYip4i-23kYnirwDg9fgHxoM5BfPAnicQLloikhHfSm1_zw42zjt1VFK0WsO8yHOi3QfGlJYEPFTlIjPmBWVXULtk7wB1U7hOefpe/s640/blogger-image--1057559751.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBAPlzFC7O8ADZYr5WG2m9vzm1rrwgCC6EUuzicOmpY5cFXr6V7cSlkSA4dyRfz9yjnINB0EJqBG73pNEgDDfx9iQw3QgjAvA1gqSuoEd6-cPcC2z56HkVxXj5OIIrr67FgGXBB0RzAz1s/s640/blogger-image--1058360733.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBAPlzFC7O8ADZYr5WG2m9vzm1rrwgCC6EUuzicOmpY5cFXr6V7cSlkSA4dyRfz9yjnINB0EJqBG73pNEgDDfx9iQw3QgjAvA1gqSuoEd6-cPcC2z56HkVxXj5OIIrr67FgGXBB0RzAz1s/s640/blogger-image--1058360733.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqgRZEQGTKGTnRL8Xh-wKhmynHgMiNBsEQUV6M4q6D3sDwYLyYtVJ6I1qrhgB5ZzezFsxYpbGrALlvjWMVAbZAkRQR8M0T0SQ8dhWpqxrycfoasRRU_hblPIJINkvYsX7fM2ydeHl3JnJv/s640/blogger-image-1805580736.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqgRZEQGTKGTnRL8Xh-wKhmynHgMiNBsEQUV6M4q6D3sDwYLyYtVJ6I1qrhgB5ZzezFsxYpbGrALlvjWMVAbZAkRQR8M0T0SQ8dhWpqxrycfoasRRU_hblPIJINkvYsX7fM2ydeHl3JnJv/s640/blogger-image-1805580736.jpg" /></a></div>Doespinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04760221190794336414noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8157957182206065559.post-87166155945540801252013-08-28T19:21:00.000+12:002013-08-28T19:33:48.664+12:00Another scarf <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Two scarves begin as some beautifully dyed madder yarn from <a href="http://www.thenaturaldyestudio.com/" target="_blank">The Natural Dye Studio</a> in a 4ply weight. Because its a yarn suitable for knitting and crochet it does have quite a bit of elasticity but it's strong enough for warp.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoZMgYUBEYwFmNlK4xFGNPxsMR8FSapupZ_mgdRautZMLLPQ7BN5yP_EKY4osLTRzIpkvtvgn654ay_9_xeBtzXfu0EpSQO-dtmbEObDvAwJOtWzUNxegvJ2QzsNwcWYbQ0iuaYpppevfx/s1600/orange2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoZMgYUBEYwFmNlK4xFGNPxsMR8FSapupZ_mgdRautZMLLPQ7BN5yP_EKY4osLTRzIpkvtvgn654ay_9_xeBtzXfu0EpSQO-dtmbEObDvAwJOtWzUNxegvJ2QzsNwcWYbQ0iuaYpppevfx/s320/orange2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The weave is plain weave with shots of a strong cotton supplementary thread placed every 6 or so throws.<br />
I like the subtle shading in this orange yarn.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ6mEL0u-Jprteq5fACXWcOkKXRzuJfNVmTSX-9jkvkg6QA4FwZEAnCf5jPXkEQkOxOSkwpUv0-m7j635XGbEw6zp0j5nSIml4ANbqVsrE8kabIkM0IKQn4Bvd9AVSuWy8ByujvieVd99Q/s1600/orange3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ6mEL0u-Jprteq5fACXWcOkKXRzuJfNVmTSX-9jkvkg6QA4FwZEAnCf5jPXkEQkOxOSkwpUv0-m7j635XGbEw6zp0j5nSIml4ANbqVsrE8kabIkM0IKQn4Bvd9AVSuWy8ByujvieVd99Q/s320/orange3.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Off the loom the threads are pulled up and tied tightly and the cloth is then soaked for an hour in warm water.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXUe72PFyeFd0DS_UdbRjArBgv90IDhpHzHYZMNqk4JxGcKnF27Vjc_F1aU4BEgOFLqZhskRVX_Jx911S2VGS4pgx0bR7-cnJzgIM6sEifupWtxzVKfE8fx56R58hL4pAQHwFZce5YYAwS/s1600/orange4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXUe72PFyeFd0DS_UdbRjArBgv90IDhpHzHYZMNqk4JxGcKnF27Vjc_F1aU4BEgOFLqZhskRVX_Jx911S2VGS4pgx0bR7-cnJzgIM6sEifupWtxzVKfE8fx56R58hL4pAQHwFZce5YYAwS/s320/orange4.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
This is the scary bit when I plunge the lovely orange fabric into an indigo dye. Whilst I've made a number of these scarves I'm always a bit nervous that the yarn is ruined. So I am always impatient to wash and rinse the fabric after dyeing and take out the gathering threads. The fabric above is actually a forest green because the indigo over the orange changes colour.<br />

As I start to take out the threads a little of the orange begins to glow through the fabric. More snipping.....<br />

Outside in all its vibrant glory. Inside under artificial light there are a few metallic sparkles like glowing embers which are impossible to show in a photograph.<br />

Warping, spinning and finishing scarves and blankets. Must take some pictures of the final weaving. Two looms have been busy whilst the one down in the Victorian precinct has been sadly neglected. This is partly because the shop has been busy with people.<br />
I've run very short of my plain weave snugly alpaca boucle scarves which sell the best out of my line. The hand dyed yarns do all the design work for me.<br />
Below are yarns and warps waiting their turn and a little of the new dyed alpaca and silk. <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid0IejtQmdo7XOJ1d5-J4AJZ-DKrkDMLqoJ69_o_6mTtWojTyNlLHBYkIsGxTvg7Wou731kLMC6lKr4IqSzJZJ55VzADEwV7ywwjql5DSshokVbafpJDRJ7vZ8AWCQFWjN2sYDuS58RGNA/s640/blogger-image-1419593855.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid0IejtQmdo7XOJ1d5-J4AJZ-DKrkDMLqoJ69_o_6mTtWojTyNlLHBYkIsGxTvg7Wou731kLMC6lKr4IqSzJZJ55VzADEwV7ywwjql5DSshokVbafpJDRJ7vZ8AWCQFWjN2sYDuS58RGNA/s640/blogger-image-1419593855.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLj1g1G9iHT2CYY1J2gYPgbgS5avwOGN60vjDWo3qqDRYd53Zg1avWzkVbi9aOCqtxFRa5svpnjs0TuSoifkXG9az_qrbaVOqPmiblm8ZWTAhueFfg4KVv0znifTYu_kd0eY59mNH5prvA/s640/blogger-image--252743501.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLj1g1G9iHT2CYY1J2gYPgbgS5avwOGN60vjDWo3qqDRYd53Zg1avWzkVbi9aOCqtxFRa5svpnjs0TuSoifkXG9az_qrbaVOqPmiblm8ZWTAhueFfg4KVv0znifTYu_kd0eY59mNH5prvA/s640/blogger-image--252743501.jpg" /></a></div> <br/><br/><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZp8d2E-1DCSgUh47LPxzoLIxy-7Z73e7Kmc9vph9uclQlMBjkPOI3PQBt-dLjHVhCthRLsT2VuHW4PpyQPENPMm9fec3Loo1IruAkMSewIbHbw01NEz2rcSeCj1J1NKYzyq4Gdl0fmPme/s640/blogger-image-703989706.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZp8d2E-1DCSgUh47LPxzoLIxy-7Z73e7Kmc9vph9uclQlMBjkPOI3PQBt-dLjHVhCthRLsT2VuHW4PpyQPENPMm9fec3Loo1IruAkMSewIbHbw01NEz2rcSeCj1J1NKYzyq4Gdl0fmPme/s640/blogger-image-703989706.jpg" /></a></div>Doespinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04760221190794336414noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8157957182206065559.post-69031949807148741932013-07-24T20:30:00.000+12:002013-07-24T20:30:07.468+12:00Woven shibori<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I really enjoy weaving cloth that is going to be scrunched, tied,creased, and crushed into a dyepot. Then it is pulled out like bedraggled butterfly wings, washed, dried and pressed back into supple cloth. Sometimes the cloth is disappointing although another dyebath can improve the design or not. It is always a risk and often surprise.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Sometimes I chose to use natural plant dyes which make the process even more time consuming and unpredictable. The cloth above was dyed using madder and eucalyptus leaves and bark from my garden. The final dyebath with logwood extract and indigo. See top right hand scarf in the first photo.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My favourite way to weave shibori threads into cloth is using a stick shuttle with the resist yarns randomly woven in. The pattern above will be similar to the scarf below which is more organic and fluid than the one being woven in th bottom photo..</div>
